Food calculator: How much does premium food cost for your four-legged friend?

The internet is full of information and offers for dog food in all price ranges. It's difficult for dog owners to keep track and make a decision. However, to make an informed decision, it's important to understand what constitutes good dog food and how prices can be explained.

To help you evaluate the value for money of dog food, we suggest you examine two aspects. You can also calculate how much feeding your dog with Alpenwuff premium food will cost you per day below.

Two aspects for evaluating the price-performance ratio

1. Quality

Quality, of course, is always a flexible term, and each feed manufacturer can define it differently. For a clear understanding of quality and value for money, a transparent feed declaration is essential, explaining exactly which ingredients have been processed and in what proportions. We recommend three steps for a quality check:

🤔 Understanding the origin of ingredients
If the meat or other ingredients are sourced from third countries or even from countries outside the EU, quality control is often only possible to a limited extent. Regulations vary widely, and genetically modified raw materials or hormone-treated animals may be present.

🤔 Take a closer look at processed animal proteins
For example, many manufacturers don't use muscle meat or offal, but instead mix in cheaper slaughterhouse byproducts such as claws, carcass meal, or feather meal. These are labeled as animal by-products.

🤔 Analyze additives
Artificial colors, fragrances, flavors, and preservatives are often used in dog food as attractants and to extend shelf life. While many dogs find them irresistible, these substances are unnatural and can have health consequences for your furry friend.

2. Nutrient combination

To ensure that dry food provides your dog with everything they need for their daily life, it should contain a balanced combination of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fiber, minerals, and vitamins, and be a complete food that meets their needs. This means it contains all the nutrients your dog needs for daily consumption. Furthermore, the calcium to phosphorus ratio should be between 1.1 and a maximum of 1.9. The crude fiber content of dry food should be between 2% and 4%, the crude ash content should be below 10%, the crude protein content should be above 18%, and the crude fat content should exceed 5%.
